Darwin on Music

I just read Darwin's "The Descent of Man" in which he describes how sexual selection has made us who we are today. Music, he says, is just a display of our higher brain function for potential mates. Or, at least, that's how he thinks it started. Whoever made the most pleasing sounds got the hot cave woman. I would argue that beneath the simple joy of music is always the want to be attractive to the opposite sex. There are many reasons why people make music, but its plain sexiness is the main one, and we don't even know it. I'm curious if this is a different thing for females. After all - "Girls just want to have fu-un." Is that the motivator, or, as Darwin also states, are they also putting on a display for guys? He saw it working both ways. I know I'm more attracted to women songwriters who seem intelligent. Anyway, some food for thought. Any female songwriters care to enlighten us?

I wrote Your Love is Like a Pizza to attract a woman. And it worked!

expression AND attraction... expression AS attraction where expression IS attraction.

nteresting take! Darwin’s view adds a fun angle, but I think today music is more about expression than attraction. Both men and women create for many reasons: Cowboy Safari emotion, identity, storytelling. But what truly motivates you to make music?
