Overheard a 20-something saying that the Beatles were overrated
He then went on to say that if an older person heard that, he would jump in to defend them. I didn't give him the pleasure, and bit my tongue. I mean, It's like saying Shakespeare was overrated. I still listen to Beatles' music with fresh ears, and while I don't like everything they did, they were consummate innovators and their influence on music was enormous. That, of course, has all been said. Are there young songwriters out there who also think the Beatles were overrated?

I can certainly see that they are not current, and there is nostalgia involved for those of us who grew up with it. I have a similar relationship to Elvis. He was before my time and he seemed like he was stuck in a time capsule - the people he spoke to were not my people. When I listen to the Beatles, I don't listen as a fan, I listen as a fellow songwriter. They were very intelligent writers and composers in a way that few modern acts are.

I once went to the Jacaranda club the Beatles first ever pro gig. You went down this old stair case spiral and went in to this tiny little place. 50 max tiny place. I honestly felt this like awe feeling. It was amazing my parents were big Beatles fans they were super jealous. But they actually saw them. I never went to the Cavern club. Went to this incredible bar where everyone was dancing i mean everyone. I really like the Beatles but not as much as Echo and the Bunnymen there my favourites

I don't really give date of release any credence when it comes to rating music. It all happened on one plane. and anything you never heard before is new. I have no issue with doing comparsons in quality between the fab four and pretty much every other act that followed. they almost always reign superior.

Definitely not overrated to me, but I can understand younger people not finding it very appealing. I've likely expressed more disparaging remarks about much of today's music, and sometimes subjective statements are passed off as objective ones.

That is such a great comment, Francesca. In addition I'm probably the only one around here that never was a Beatle's fan even back in the day. At the time I was so into the Motown sound and the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys (even though some of their surfing stuff I couldn't really relate to) as well as a bunch of other NY based Rock and Roll/Soul sounding artists. I didn't prefer the Beatles to all of that at all.

Not overrated, but not current. I like their humour and ability to challenge the norms, but like everything, as it gets older it becomes the norm and the freshness goes. I often wonder why people who support indie, when asked about their influences always go straight to the biggest mainstream bands of half a century ago.
