Mastering question
I have a bunch new songs that are fully mixed and I intend to master them. In the past, I’ve always mastered the music and vocals together with good results but I was wondering if mastering the music and vocals separately would yield a significantly better product or would it not be a noticeable improvement.

If you did them separately then it would be considered mixing rather than mastering, but that's just words. Do what you like and see how it sounds. In a sense I do something similar. I tend to route all the instruments into one bus and put compression on that responds about 1-3db whenever the kick and snare hit (if you've got them in the song) it stops the snare being too pokey but stops it from getting lost. This kind of glues and blends all the instruments and when I put all the vocals through a separate bus, I can use compression and eq to level them out on their own without the vocal signal affecting the volume of the instruments. It basically keeps everything nice and clear and seperated where it needs to be. Once I'm happy with that I'll start to tinker with my master bus settings, and/or export it all for mastering.
