A few thoughts from Mahler, a great grand daddy of indie music
Gustav Mahler, a famous conductor in the early 1900s, while receiving mixed reviews for his own symphonies. Over the years, his own music grows in reputation, now very popular. "A symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything." When asked why he comes to work (conductor) every day..."Weaving the living garment of God, that at least is something." "The walls resonate in sympathy. The whole hall is impregnated with music." "Nature as a whole is aroused, so to speak, from unfathomable silence to sound and resonance."

Oh, Open Book - there is a similar quote by Debussy that I have always loved ... The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them.
