George Washington, a hero bedevilled w bad teeth

George Washington was the nation's first president, and led the colonies through the Revolutionary War. Hugely popular guy... "When George Washington opened his mouth 225 years ago this Wednesday at New York’s Federal Hall to take the oath as the first president of the United States, he wore awkward-fitting, painful, face-disfiguring dentures. For years, he had suffered from dental problems; that morning he had swollen, burning gums and only a single original tooth in his mouth. He wore this particular set of dentures during the last nine years of his life. They clacked and creaked open and shut on tight wire springs..." N. Y. Times article M'song George Washington, http://www.indiemusicpeople.com/songs.aspx?SongID=89020&ArtistID=35146

If only Benjamin Franklin had thought about it, he might have had a solution. Jefferson, as Vice President also ran the Patent Office. I read a fascinating bio of Eli Whitney. He and Jefferson corresponded regularly. He built a factory in Hamden, CT in three months from scratch, including a dam to drive the machinery, all of the buildings including quarters for the workers and a store. Today you couldn't even get the environmental studies, the permits or the planning and zoning hearings scheduled in that amount of time. Thanks Steve. George Washington Cute song. Glenn
