In my book, that would be Marvin Gaye and right behind him would be Al Green. Marvin was the better songwriter but Al had more Soul than anyone I ever saw live. Yet, it is hard to mention either one of those dudes without thinking about brother James Brown. The original architect of Funk. that man had Soul in his eye lids. He wreaked Soul from top to bottom. Pick any of those 3 and you have no argument from me.

Great names listed already. I'll add Curtis Mayfield to the list.

How about Sam Cooke, who wrote memorable songs like "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Another Saturday Night," and "What a Wonderful World," (don't know much about history/don't know much biology")... "A Change Is Gonna Come", gotta be top 10 songs all time imhv...brought gospel to the people, for one...majesty... Smokey Robinson, great songwriter, great tunes, touches the heartstrings...***

I just like what i hear not an expert in Soul wish i knew more. The guy that still freaks me out is Django Reinhardt. How is it possible to do what he does with only two fingers. But without Stefan Grappelli i don't think you would ever heard the name Django Reinhardt. However the Hot club of France is a great band

All of the names Paul and FT mentioned are kings in my book. They’re equally talented in different ways. It would be a futile endeavor to rank or compare them. If I was forced to make a choice, I’d say Otis Redding and that Try A Little Tenderness is one of the greatest soul songs of all time, especially the way Otis performed it.

My personal favorite is Stevie but it could also be Marvin or Al Green or Otis.
