Bob... Most of what I love in hip-hop happened 20 years ago, as well. (And those three bands, including Eric B. & Rakim and some others.) But I don't think that it's hip-hop's fault so much as a factor of my getting older. If you want to hear some newer stuff that you would like, check out the following: Outkast Gnarls Barkley D'Angelo and Kanye West Yeah, Kanye can be an ass, but Graduation is a freaking masterpiece. Brilliantly conceived and totally emotionally moving, if you're open to hearing some newer hip-hop. Also, IAC's own SLIMDOG is a helluva producer and works with some pretty good MCs.

hip hop isn't overated as much as thug hop parenting your kids is underrated, and MTV is a shitty babysitter.

Maybe a bit of the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome.

I don't want to presume to speak for the trashman but maybe he or she thinks that this genre is considered more legitimate by the media and society than it should be.

How is an entire GENRE of music "overrated"? Like rock, pop, classical, jazz, dub, or any other music, there is a ton that is outstanding, and -- yes -- a ton that does suck. You may not like hip-hop, but to call a whole genre "overrated" paints you into a corner and makes you come off as ignorant and closed-minded. But if you want to defend your position, just HOW is Hip-Hop "overrated"? Not trying to be confrontational, I'm just curious to your reasoning.
