For all those who have sympathy for Heather Mills in her round-the-word cry about the media tour, word came out yesterday that her attorney dropped her. Imagine how much of a pain you'd have to be to cut yourself out of those millions to ditch the client. Sorry for the sidenote but this was easier than digging up my old thread.

Great Song Sam.... The Last Beatle will probably be gone around the same time as my parents as they are the same age as Paul... God Willing it will be Many years from now....

Hugh, Were gonna have to start Calling you Cover Boy :) Actually I have thought about doing some Beatle Covers, I used to have a real cool one of "Im Only Sleeping" I accidently cleared it off my Hard drive, I wish I knew of Harry Fox...I would have posted it! I would like to do a simple acoustic version of "In My Life" Just checked the "Missing the Beatles" station here at IAC, By no Coincidence you and I are on it Hugh :) In fact we are the last two tunes. Either the station Manager wanted to end in style, or they are the weakest tunes.... LOL

Actually "She Loves You" (with those opening toms) probably is the archetypal Beatle song in my mind, and my "launching off" point...

John - just saw yer question "which song first" - my head's swimming now and it's hard to answer...probably an early one, "I Wanna Hold Yer Glands" or such...Hugo's brain sometimes works chronologically. Sometimes it doesn't work at all...

I had a listen to a few Revolver tunes this morning, lying in bed, in honor of the popularity of "She Said, She Said" here. "Taxman" and "And Your Bird Can Sing" have a bit of an edge with Hugo. As much as I adore Revolver, the two albums I find myself "studying" most are Rubber Soul and Abbey Road...I've also been so thrilled by the raw studio footage / demos from the Anthology DVDs. Ringo, is that you buzzing? Oh, no...it's a fly on the wall...Rain and Paperback Writer are certainly special, flyboy...same session(s) I believe, similar sonic vibe...the underlying rhythm tracks on Paperback Writer are truly exceptional if you ask me. Rain edges it out on the "originality" front though. I did a cover of Taxman with two friends. It's pretty good, but a bit spazzy here & there. When I listen to the original I am in awe of how "ON" those guys were. There were certainly times when the tempo shifted around a bit (which is fine - did the tempo swings in "You Won't See Me" ever BOTHER you?) but man, they could lock on to a feisty groove like a pitbull... "Run For Your Life" used to be my favorite song in the history of the world, when I was about 14. John came to hate it for its obvious hatefulness. I still LOVE the slide guitar work on that one, and the vocal harmonies (simple but just right). This thread has me about to start a new station. Dang.

Whaddya mean "pick one"? As in favorite? Only one you can ever listen to again? Luckily they all play in my head in the absence of external stimulus, but that's a scary proposition...I hear the Beatley string influence in some of yer tunes, John... I can't possibly pick one. I can't even pick one ALBUM (lol)...

I must NOT upload the "Here Comes The Sun" cover I did when I got my new Martin last spring (pictured)...I must NOT...must NOT...must NOT...I might have to avoid this thread - or I'll simply wind up humiliating myself (further)... ;)

Awesome bass on "Something" - also on "Here Comes the Sun," for that matter(!!) - and here's something I thought about and chased for DECADES (geek! geek!) and finally came up with an answer...and then had that confirmed in the "Recording the Beatles" book...have you ever tried to nail the lead guitar sound in "Something"? It's virtually impossible...then I got to thinking...hmm...they were using the ADT (Artificial Double Tracking) on vocals all the time...maybe they used it on other stuff too...I finally figured they probably used it on that lead axe...turns out the book specifies that that was in fact the case...I'm telling you, that $100 book can save you decades of headache...lol... FT - which song were you referring to?

Oh - back to your original question, John - I saw Jeff's reply of P.F. and the first name that came to me was Pink Floyd. No, that's obviously wrong. The second name was Peter Frampton. Yeah, that's probably it... So I peeked at Hugh's note on your page. Yeah, that makes more sense. Silly me.

The source eludes me - may have been an Anthology dvd segment - or more likely was an interview of George I saw at youtube (I was surprised how many interviews are posted there). Over the summer I was having a real "I miss George" period and spent a day watching stuff there...George not only said that Paul played the solo, but added that he (George) always liked it and was touched, because he felt that Paul used a kind of "Indian" scale in the solo to please him...was a lovely statement considering the rancor that had intervened. I've also seen the fact in print, probably in "Recording the Beatles" (if you don't have it, buy it!) :)
