When/how did you first get online?
I bought my first PC in 1992 (an IBM PS/1 with 512k of memory and no hard drive!!!) and it came with a Prodigy free trial disk, so I connected my 2400 baud modem and dialed up. No world wide web yet, so you were limited to whatever was on Prodigy's network. I remember that you could send 30 emails/month free, and after that each one cost .25!

Doug, I remember the local bbs scene. We had a few here, and they would support one user at a time since you had to dial in to their "the modem." I remember Genie. And Delphi. When I left Prodigy I went over to National Videotext, then Delphi, then AOL. By then local ISPs were springing up all over the place.

Yes, 2001 for me, prior to that as a pretty organic sort of guy, I had always tried to keep from getting drawn into the world of gadgets and gimmicks, But college research and typing and printing of reports and essays left me no choice but to hook up, So I had a yahoo number and my kid brothers old MMX233 with a 1gig hdd. So what did I first encounter? trojans, Spyware, Viruses, Flamers, Dodgy Money Shots, oh, and the old mp3.com, So up went a track "Aerobix Girls", inspired by the Stagliano movie "Aerobisex" heh! it was #1 in the first week!!! Well, I thought, I have hundreds of tracks, and they were paying half a cent per 30sec play, I said to my self, hey, load em up, I went on to flood the site with stuff, and met all sorts of wonderful characters, including some of the greats like Larree, FT, Mike Burn, Stoogy, Arjen(The Paradigm) Saw lots of great artists coming and going, So, a few years down the line? Well I'm a lot more cynical now huh, Been there, done that, but still get pleasantly surprised when I hear the great tunes pouring on to the web, with blatent disregard for the "mainstream music industry" I feel that I am still hated in my hometown for my past achievements, wtf?(ne scots hate seeing success), but the reality and shalloweness of the music biz is that probably I have already been forgotten! Internet, lol!

Early/mid 80's. You had to directly dial up a particular BBS on the landline phone (Whut?) Paying long distance charges, too, if it was LD (most all were from me). Did it with an Atari 8-bit computer. Home built serial interface, commercial modem. 300 baud. Then I was on GEnie, a network that used General Electric's computers at night and with spare computing time. GEnie was great. They had a local number. $5.00 an hour or something like that. I even released a couple of shareware proggies there (music progs, natch). They had a great downloadable program base (legal). Then to Compuserve when I got richer. Then to AOL. They were all great in their times, such as they were.

i think it was 2001.i already had a computer and AOL,but never went on line.then i bought a Roland VS2480 recorder.the manual was in "Japanenglish" so i really was havin a hard time. i got on line and did a search and found some great help sites and forums,VS Planet being the best by far.about a week later i started posting my music and have been at it ever since.
